TC Electronic Sub ‘N’ Up Octaver

TC Electronic Sub ‘N’ Up is a modern octave pedal with lots of adjustment options, including tone editing via the TonePrint smartphone app. It lets you blend dry, octave-up and two sub-octaves, for both chords or single-tone lead lines.

Overview

The Sub ‘N’ Up Octaver pedal from TC Electronic is capable of generating a broad range of soundscapes, ranging from 12-string to synth-like, single-tone sounds. It has four knobs, including Dry, Up, Sub, and Sub 2, but what’s arguably more interesting is the TonePrint smartphone app.

TC Electronic’s TonePrint software is installed on your smartphone (available for iPhone/Android) and allows for downloading and “beaming” presets from your phone to the pedal. That way, you can instantly add presets created by various artists (or the manufacturer) for use with the pedal. The software also lets you edit different characteristics of the sound, via e.g. EQ curves and other options.  You can adjust additional details using the free TonePrint Editor for PC, Mac and iPad.

However, the most important things here are of course the pitch-shifting features. Using the TonePrint presets or the control knobs, you can coax the Sub ‘N’ Up Octaver to produce lots of different octave sounds, such as an old-school monophonic sound, polyphonic tracking, and heavy sub-octave depth – or just simple bass lines.
